Baytown Municipal Court Welcomes New Judge
The City of Baytown has officially sworn in Judge Michael Garner as the newest judge for the Baytown Municipal Court. The oath of office was administered during a ceremony by retiring Judge Julie Escalante, who served the city for 28 years. City leaders and staff attended the event to recognize Escalante’s long service and welcome Garner back to the Baytown community. (Baytown)
Before taking the bench, Garner served as City Attorney in Conroe and previously worked for Baytown as Assistant City Attorney. During his earlier time with the city, he played an important role in transitioning Baytown’s Municipal Court into a Court of Record, giving him experience with the court system he now leads. (Baytown)
Judge Garner has already begun his role and will soon start presiding over cases in the Municipal Court. (Baytown)
ExxonMobil’s Low-Carbon Hydrogen Project in Baytown
ExxonMobil is developing what could become the world’s largest low-carbon hydrogen facility at its massive refining and petrochemical complex in Baytown, Texas. The project is designed to produce up to 1 billion cubic feet of hydrogen per day, using natural gas combined with carbon capture technology to remove more than 98% of the CO₂ emissions generated during production. (ExxonMobil)
The hydrogen would help power ExxonMobil’s own Baytown operations and could also be sold to other industries seeking lower-carbon fuel sources. In addition, the project plans to produce over 1 million tons of low-carbon ammonia annually, which can be used to transport hydrogen globally and support cleaner energy applications. (ExxonMobil)
The initiative is part of ExxonMobil’s broader strategy to reduce emissions from heavy industry and support the energy transition. If completed, the facility would significantly cut emissions at the Baytown complex while positioning the Houston-area energy corridor as a major hub for hydrogen production. (ExxonMobil)
However, progress has faced challenges. The company has paused the project temporarily due to uncertain demand and economic conditions, though executives say they still believe hydrogen will play a key role in the future energy system. (Reuters)
