Garth Road Widening Project Ramps Up

Barbers Hill ISD Proposes $95M Bond to Upgrade Athletic Facilities, Voters to Decide in May

Barbers Hill Independent School District in coastal Texas is asking voters to consider a $95 million bond package on the May 2 ballot that would fund major upgrades to its athletic facilities. The proposal includes building a new multipurpose athletic fieldhouse, renovating Eagle Stadium, and improving locker rooms to better support student-athletes. District leaders say the current fieldhouse, built in 1980, has not seen significant upgrades in decades, and the surge in student enrollment — which has grown roughly 58 % over the past decade — has prompted a need for expanded and modernized athletic space. The bond is designed so that property tax rates won’t increase, thanks to the district’s growing tax base from increased enrollment. Barbers Hill High School was recently reclassified from UIL Class 5A to 6A due to that growth, and Superintendent Dr. Greg Poole noted that the upgrades would help align the district’s facilities with those of other large Texas high schools.
